You will be aware that in the recently published DfE Review of the Curriculum it is proposed to create a new Oracy Framework for Primary and Secondary Schools to support teachers in developing students’ spoken language skills.

The Review emphasises the oracy should be “a whole school consideration” embedded in the school’s ethos, routines and extracurricular activities.

NEA are a well-established regulated exam board who have for many years offered a Speaking and Listening Syllabus which supports students’ speaking, listening and communication skills in a graded and progressional way from Preparatory Grade right up to Grade 8. This Syllabus offers all teachers support with practical approaches which sit alongside the speaking and listening curriculum from Reception to A ‘Level.

NEA’s Graded exams offer teachers a readymade Scheme of Work with the benefits of meaningful feedback and a certificate to reward each individual student’s achievement. In addition, NEA’s Grades 6, 7 and 8 carry UCAS tariff points for successful students. 

NEA’s Syllabus enables students to develop effective communication skills and express themselves through clear expressive speech in a relevant and meaningful way. It allows students to develop:

·         Imagination, creativity and originality

·         A wide range of vocal techniques

·         Increased vocabulary

·         Clarity of thought and an ability to share ideas clearly

·         How to structure and present ideas

·         Active listening skills

·         How to respond to others

·         Critical thinking and respectful debate

·         Collaboration

·         An understanding of poetry and literature

·         Skills that can be carried into every subject area

·         Their personal voice which is an important life skill for the future

This Syllabus offers multiple cross curricular opportunities alongside the wide range of other syllabus disciplines offered by NEA which support the whole-school culture of speech, confidence, articulate communication, performance and presentation.
